October 11, 2019
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, so Monarch at Waugh Chapel, (and all Bozzuto properties), are accepting donations and funds for the BREM Foundation.
Monarch at Waugh Chapel is also hosting a “Paint Our Town Pink” themed open house for prospective residents on October 12th. We will be providing cupcakes from the local bakery in Laurel, Basket Treats, donated by one of our residents. We encourage all prospects and residents to donate to the cause!
According to the BREM Foundation:
By increasing awareness, most women may be able to detect their breast cancer early. Therefore, we may increase the chances of survival by knowing the risk factors, the importance of screening and image testing, and advocating for patient rights. Find out more on their website.
Cancer is a broad term for diseases that are characterized by the rapid division, development, and growth of abnormal cells in the body. These abnormal and cancerous cells invade healthy and normal cells within the anatomy.
Breast cancer begins in the tissue of the breasts as a cluster of abnormal cells that may then spread to surrounding tissue or other areas within the body.
Except for dermatological cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer for American women. Please click the link above to inform yourself of risk factors, stages, types, and diagnoses.
So, what is Breast Cancer Awareness Month? It is the month-long campaign to increase awareness and information on breast cancer. The mission of NBCAM is to aid those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support or advocacy services.
The national Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established in October 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries.
The Pink Ribbon was established by Evelyn Lauder, former VP of Estee Lauder Companies, in the year of 1993. However, the ribbon was passed out before this. Susan G. Komen in 1991 handed out pink ribbons during a NYC race to runners to increase the awareness for breast cancer survivors. Check out the story here.
The BREM Foundation is the first breast-imaging fellowship to offer a community service and public outreach for physician training on the disease. They also donate funds for women in need of mammograms, screening, and educational and support services.
The BREM foundation was founded by Rachel Brem MD after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was only 12 years old. Since that day, she was inspired to encourage patients to “beat the odds.”
Dr. Rachel Brem graduated from the Columbia Medical School with a specialized training in radioactive and breast imaging. At 37 years old, she discovered her own breast cancer by screening herself. Through this, she encouraged all patients to undergo CAD, MBI, MRI, and ABUS scans to detect the cancer early.
So, we encourage residents to help us, along with the BREM Foundation, to increase resources and advocacy for all women affected by breast cancer.
