Did you hear the joke about the Liberty Bell? It’ll crack you up.
Fourth of July is right-around-the-corner!
While it is not the actual date the colonies separated from British Imperialist rule, the July Fourth of July is the all-encompassing date of “American freedom.” The Declaration of Independence was actually signed on the Second of August. But, Continental Congress approved the “final draft,” of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776.
A century later, circa 1870, Congress declared the Fourth of July, or “Independence Day,” as a national holiday to further celebrate patriotism.
What Was Maryland’s Role?
Maryland was actually quite the important State back in the old days and, well, not much has changed!
In the Revolutionary War, Maryland was known for “The Line,” which consisted of dozens of soldiers that kept British imperialists out of the State.
Maryland, however, was, and is, notorious for Fell’s Point and Fort McHenry, which were known for privateering ships and the navy. Our country’s national anthem was actually written right here in Maryland, in Fort McHenry.
Later, Maryland became a democratic and political meeting spot. Delegates would come and discuss sociopolitical and/or philosophical ideas. In fact, the Treaty of Paris was signed in Annapolis.
To celebrate this upcoming holiday, visit Fort McHenry park or the Washington monument!
COVID-Cautious Celebrations
Even though most large fireworks displays will be cancelled, you can still celebrate everything red, white, and blue this upcoming Fourth of July.
Try baking some red, white, and blue cupcakes, cakes, cookies, or your dessert of choice. Enjoy your patriotic goodies outside with your loved ones. If you’re feeling particularly parched, then check out these Fourth of July inspired cocktails here.
Get crafty and paint some flower/succulent pots with red, white, and blue stripes. You can even paint some stars, or fireworks.
