On a hot summer day, nothing hits the spot quite like a scoop (or two) of ice cream. If you’re looking for an excuse to indulge in this sweet treat, Sunday, July 19, is National Ice Cream Day.
To help you find the perfect sundae this Sunday, we’ve gathered up a list of some of our favorite local ice cream spots. If you visit any of them, snap a pic and share it with us on our social media channels.
What’s the Scoop on National Ice Cream Day?
National Ice Cream Day was started by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as a way to celebrate America’s favorite frozen dessert and commemorate the efforts of the American dairy industry. Did you know Americans lead the world when it comes to ice cream consumption? In fact, we enjoy 23 gallons a year on average! Our home state even plays an important part of ice cream history—the first known mention of ice cream in the U.S. comes from a letter written in Maryland in 1744. How cool!
Nearby Ice Cream Shops
Conveniently located right across the street in Waugh Chapel Towne Centre, Kilwins has some of the best ice cream in town! They have lots of premium, high-quality flavors to choose from, but we’re suckers for their classic chocolate shake. If you’ve ever walked by the shop, you’re probably familiar with some of their other specialties: freshly made waffle cones, chocolate delicacies and other confections being made right in front of you, inside the store. Stop by for a scoop or shake of your favorite ice cream flavor, and pick up some candy to bring home for tomorrow!
Brusters is “a scoop above the rest,” but we’ll let you put that claim to the test. The store has been serving scoops since 1989, bringing old-fashioned quality to fun, new flavors. Check out one of their latest creations, S’mores made with Oreo cookies! If you bring your furry friend, they even have free “doggie sundaes.”
Another well-established favorite is Storm Bros Ice Cream Factory, a great destination for ice cream lovers since 1976 in downtown Annapolis. They have a wide variety of options, including soft serve and flurries. Make sure to grab a hand-packed pint or quart to-go to bring back to your apartment home here at Monarch Waugh Chapel.
Annapolis Ice Cream Company has been voted “Best Ice Cream” in Annapolis several times for their homemade ice cream. This family owned and operated shop was founded by two New England natives who wanted to bring their childhood favorite dessert to their new hometown. They serve creative flavors like Cookie Monster, birthday cake and more, including a few vegan options.
If you’re too cool for regular ice cream, try Sub Zero Ice Cream in Columbia! Nitrogen ice cream uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the ice cream, making a dense and delicious consistency. They have some seriously chill combinations, like “Key Lime Voltage,” with lime, cheesecake and graham crackers, and “Mass Mocha Madness,” with mocha, chocolate, Heath, and almonds.
You can also check out Baskin Robbins or Cold Stone Creamery, which each have locations nearby Monarch Waugh Chapel. Baskin Robbins is offering a free scoop with every order over $15 through DoorDash on July 19th to celebrate!
We hope your National Ice Cream Day is super sweet!
