The summer heat makes staying active sticky, sweaty, and much less enjoyable. If you’re looking for alternative and fun ways to stay cool and active, our beautiful state of Maryland has just that.
Here are a few fun, fresh, and enjoyable places to explore not too far from your home here at Monarch Waugh Chapel.
Kayaking, Canoeing, and Swimming… OH MY!
Assateague Island is a 37-mile-long coastline covering both Maryland and Virginia. You can view and explore this national seashore on horseback or in a canoe, even a kayak! Take a dive into the crisp ocean, surf some waves, or float along in a lifeguard protected beach area. Explore the rest of the island on a hike, bike ride, or a ranger-guided tour. Janes Island resides peacefully in Crisfield, near Maryland’s Eastern Shore. 30 miles of water trails provide a perfect place to fish, crab, and ride motorboats. The 2,900 acres of saltmarsh are seemingly untouched by man and are waiting to be explored. After paddling through the water and discovering more of the island, picnic tables and the nature center offer a spot to eat and relax. Find out more.
Monnie Bay Water Trails provide three different kayaking trails, with ranging levels of difficulty. Expect to stay cool on the water while observing wildlife like shorebirds, barn owls, and seaside sparrows.
Gunpowder Falls State Park is divided into 6 areas. But, all of these areas come loaded with enjoyable summer activities like canoeing, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. This state park is unique because of its historic location at Jerusalem Mill Historic Village.
Fishing, Rafting, and MORE!
Smith Island, home of the nations soft crab industry, is in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay. A ferry ride ushers you to Smith Island where you’ll find local restaurants and stunning views. Fly fishing is a popular activity in this community, along with boat tours and paddle guides. If you like crab-cakes or catching crabs yourself, this is your place. To top it off, Smith Island is home to Maryland’s official state dessert—Smith Island Cake!
Youghiogheny Wild River Natural Environmental Area cuts through the mountains in Maryland before entering Pennsylvania. Navigate the rivers by whitewater rafting or kayaking. Keep your eyes peeled for endangered animal and plant species while you fish or explore the rapids. Learn more.
Terrapin Beach Park is made for environmental enthusiast and avid hikers. The trails are lined with gorgeous wildlife and the observation decks make it easy to spy all types of birds, fish, and amphibians.
