September 18, 2020
Monarch residents, September is a very important month in the Jewish religion—it includes two of their most important holidays, Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah is celebrated on Friday, September 18th until the following Sunday. In basic terms, Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year because it is the first day in a period of ten holy days following it. Yom Kippur is celebrated on Sunday, September 27, and ends the following evening. It is considered the holiest day of the year in Jerusalem.
No matter your faith, this September is the perfect time to try some of Maryland’s favorite Jewish restaurants:
The Parkway Deli is a New York style deli open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner since 1963. They recently opened a new outdoor patio to comply with social distancing. From 9 am to 9 pm, Parkway provides delivery, dine-in, or pickup.
They also provide specific Jewish holiday platters that are enough to feed the whole family. Enjoy platters such as their sandwich platter, nova and cream cheese platter, buffet platter, pastry platter, and many more.
If you are looking to just get something for yourself, they offer many different individual (and delicious) sandwiches as well.
This kosher deli has been in business for nine years and has provided great Shabbat takeout, even offering a Shabbos menu specifically catered to the Holidays. In addition, they make their own sushi, which can also be bought as a platter.
Knish is open from 10 am to 8 pm on most days, except for Thursday and Friday—they close early. Gift certificates are also available for Knish if you want to give someone something nice for the Jewish holiday this year.
The Essen Rooms slogan is “where the size matters,” and they do not fail to live up to their slogan. This New York style deli offers massive sandwiches at a good price. They provide specific holiday menus that include a Yom Kippur menu as well as a Rosh Hashanah menu.
Two of their most popular sandwiches are the corn beef hash sandwich and the pastrami sandwich. The Essen Room even has their own eating challenge—if a customer can finish one G.B.M.F sandwich, one order of potato salad, one order of coleslaw, and one pickle in less than 55 minutes then the meal is free and you get your name on the wall. For big portions and big taste, be sure to stop The Essen Room.
Attmans is a family owned and operated deli that started in 1915. Through four generations, Attmans has been making some, if not the best corned beef in Maryland. Attmans claims to be the best on Baltimore’s famous corned beef row. They offer breakfast, lunch, or dinner catering as well as individual deli items. Two of their most famous menu items are the corned beef sandwich and Attman’s world famous jumbo Jewish hot dogs. Attmans has locations in Baltimore, as Potomac, MD. Both locations are open from 8AM-5PM everyday.
The Kosher Pastry Oven is a cafe now open for carry out from 9AM-4PM. Decide from three different menus of Breakfast, Dinner, and Catering.
The pies and pastries on their bakery menu are absolutely delightful, so be sure to take some time to enjoy this Kosher bakery.
Enjoy!
Although you may or may not be Jewish, it is always important to fill your palate with the cultures of others. This September is a big month for the Jewish community; so don’t hesitate in joining in!
