Looking to get away this Labor Day Weekend, but travel restrictions got you down? You can still have fun and stay safe with these nearby, drivable destinations that will allow you to connect with and explore nature.
Take a look at our top three destinations to safely travel this Labor Day Weekend:
Deep Creek Lake
Deep Creek Lake is a beautiful lake located in Garrett County, MD. The small town requires anyone visiting to wear a face mask when indoors and public places where distancing is not possible. The county has also urged all indoor establishments to have sanitizer dispensers available for visitors. You’re sure to feel safe while you take in the scenic views of this beloved Maryland destination.
Things to do:
There are endless things to do at Deep Creek Lake, especially lake activities like boating, water sports, jet skiing, kayaking, rafting, tubing and fishing. If being on land is more your style, try hiking, mini golf, go-karting, zip lining, biking, a day at the spa, or a full day of golf at one of the three golf courses in the Deep Creek area. And don’t forget about the 90,000 acres of state land in and around Deep Creek full of parks, forests, and waterfalls—free for all to explore.
Places to eat:
One of the more well known restaurants in the Deep Creek area is Deep Creek Seafood, which is known for its lake views and seafood classics. Another popular restaurant is Dutch’s at Silver Tree, which is an upscale eatery that offers good steaks and great seafood.
Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah National Park is following guidance from the CDC, as well as state and local public health authorities. As a result, park officials are increasing access and services for re-opening in a phased schedule. You’ll feel safe amidst the 20,000 acres of protected lands, filled with cascading waterfalls and beautiful forests.
Things to do:
Some of the things to do at the park include biking, hiking, backcountry camping, viewing the wildlife, participating in the ranger programs, or going to see the various museum exhibitions. After a long day of activities, you can view all of the stars under Shenandoah’s beautiful night sky.
Places to eat:
There are two different places to eat onsite at the park—Skyland and Big Meadows Lodge— as well as food stops along Skyline Drive.
Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry is a beautiful historic town full of picturesque scenery and fun things to do. The town is following a structured safety protocol that requires a phased reopening. This means that some locations in the town are closed in order to ensure the safety of visitors. In addition, the CDC has instructed officials of the town to follow strict sanitation procedures.
Things to do:
There are many historical sites and outdoor activities to fill your day with in Harpers Ferry. The Civil War museum, located in the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, is one of the more popular museums. Other attractions include The John Brown Museum or a ghost tour around Harpers Ferry. Also consider taking a bike ride or hike through the long distance trails surrounding the town. Want more adventure? Spend the day whitewater rafting!
Places to eat:
One of the more popular places to eat is The Anvil Restaurant, which offers a casual dining experience. If you are looking to start your day with a hot cup of coffee, you should head down to Battle Grounds Baker & Coffee.
