Looking for a new spot to explore close to home? Take a drive to Mandares Creek Sanctuary, just about a 10-minute drive from your apartment. Encompassing eight acres, it’s the only marshland that belongs to the Maryland Ornithological Society, who takes great pride and care in protecting the local habitats. There are no official trails, but the land is pretty easily accessible and navigable, just make sure you have your GPS in case you get a little turned around.
One major reason people love to come to the sanctuary is because of the incredible amount of wildlife, specifically birds! You can check out their listing on eBird to see what other bird watchers have spotted during their adventures in the sanctuary. On any given day you can expect to see Vireos, European Starlings, American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, Vultures, Doves, and so many more.
To park for your adventure, there’s a sawmill right past the sanctuary and you just have to tell them your destination and ask to park.
